"Have you ever had a sublime, or nearly religious experience due to a visit to a unique work of architecture?"

this is an interesting question… and to the  surprise of many, the answer is… yes!

when i was in high school, my senior year, the drama crew went to new york city. the entire trip was amazing and i was in awe at so many things, but what really struck me hard was the trip to the empire state building. our group went at night, somewhere near midnight or maybe 1am, we piled into the elevators and made the long trip upwards into the observation deck at the top. once there i first felt the overwhelming desire to go the hell back down. because i have vertigo and i do not like high places.. but something kept me there, and i made my way out to the big overlook area. i gripped the supports of the fencing tightly and peered down, first being blinded by the lights that shine up at the top of the building, but then once shifting my gaze, i saw the city below and i felt this rush that i can never quite describe. i’d never been up that high in all my life.. yeah sure i’ve been on a roller coaster, and i’ve been in those observation towers at theme parks, but that was nothing compared to this.

i wish that my photos were scanned… or that i’d had a digital camera back then. the view was amazing. this was before 9/11 (like only a few months before) so the twin towers still stood. the night was perfect and you could see the lights and cars, everything was tiny but so beautiful. i could have stayed up there for the rest of the trip and been content.

while up there i ended up finding a payphone and calling my parents to tell them about this amazing thing i had just seen, but it was nearly 2am by then and they were not so happy to receive my call :p i talked so much and got so excited up there, that the cold air of april took my voice and i spent the remainder of the trip unable to speak.

but it was worth it.
