a while ago i signed up for the weblogit challenge on daydreamz.net because i need more ideas on stuff to blog. this week’s theme is things you hide from people and honestly, i’m not too comfortable with this topic because well.. if i hide things i don’t want to talk about them! but i didn’t want to be a douche and back out on the first prompt so lets see…
i hide my identity. not fully, but partly. you might get to know me a little by my blog or something you see on a social network, but i try to do the best i can to keep people from knowing enough about me to show up at my door. its kind of annoying because there are so many sites that want full names or addresses and i am always worried that this information will somehow become public. its why when i first signed up for facebook, i used my second life name because i wanted to be able to connect with second life friends as well as online friends and real life friends, and not have my real name out there for all to see. now that i’ve been forced to change it to my real name or face deletion of my profile, i find myself connecting less because i have to hide. i can’t push the like button on people’s blogs because i worry about my name being there. i freak out enough when i go to people’s blogs and see a big sidebar application showing where exactly i came from (town and state). that bothers me… i’ve also had times where i thought information was private and then sites come back later and change settings on things and suddenly info is out there in the public. this frightens me and if i find it i change it as soon as possible. i’ve even gone so far as to put an address i don’t live at currently in order to combat this sort of crap.
why do i hide this so much? well honestly the internet is full of fucked up people. yes that is a paranoid statement but we live in a pretty messed up world. there are people out there that can do serious harm to you and yours and personally i just don’t want that to happen to me. so while you might get to read about my daily adventures in boredom, and hell even see my ugly mug grace this page once or twice, you’re not going to know my name (unless you’re a really good friend) and you’re not going to know much about where i live. i have met some really nice people by being a part of forums and websites, and of course second life, and i’m not saying you’re all blood crazed maniacs, but i’d rather not take that chance.
i don’t really hide much else that i’d want to actually blog about, so this blog is pretty much fail
sorry.

We appreciate you participating and I, for one will not stalk you! Also, love your cloud emoticons!
I’m curious if you had some close calls or know someone who did and that makes you a bit more concerned about privacy?

no i’ve actually never had any close calls but i come from pretty paranoid genes lol so i’ve always been very educated on internet safety and seeing the stuff that’s been on the news about people being harmed or even murdered due to people that found them on the internet, it scares the shit out of me. i have a big mouth and sometimes my attitude pisses people off and with all the psychos on the internet, i’d just rather those pissed off people not know where i live lol. as an example, a woman who flamed my blog a few months ago (the comments were deleted cause i’m not dealing with it) was also harassing some other people that i knew, she threatened one woman’s step kids among other things, and this was just over a small disagreement! so when you have psychos like that running around, there’s no way in hell i can feel safe about that info being out there.

Honestly, more people should be like you in the aspect of what they do and post online. There are just too many people who bare it all and wonder why they were fired from their jobs. As for facebook why not use a common last name like Gray or Smith, or some other last name? Facebook can’t demand that you provide proof. It might make you feel slightly better as well.
I honestly feel the same way with the town and state thing as well. In some respects I wish I were more like you. Sometimes I wonder if it’s too late.

well one of the biggest reasons i don’t give out my town is because its small so it would be easier to find me than if i lived somewhere with a large population.
its never too late to lock it all down, i was way lax with it when i was younger but i THINK i’ve secured the majority of my stuff.

I try to be conscious of what I do online, particularly because I do everything with my real name. I tried being anonymous once ages ago, but my dad found my blog so I decided I’d only put things online if I was ok with my family seeing it. In some ways I probably have too much info out there, but I’ve met a lot of great people in real life that I met first on the web.
Cori says:
I never used to care about who knew my name, I never post my address or phone number (stop asking, Facebook!), but other than that I wasn’t too careful. Since having Claire, though. I kind of debated even posting pictures of her. I’m a lot more careful with my private information, and I still debate with myself over the pictures of her I post. Pretty much anything I’m not comfortable with is kept private in Facebook or Flickr, only a small handful are open for the world.

Oh I definitely don’t blame you for hiding information. I do the same as much as I can. Most places I still refer to myself by my online alias. I hate having my full name on facebook. This blog entry is definitely NOT fail so there!

I should try and hide my identity more than I do. I post my name on Facebook. I never post my phone number or address. You never know what kind of people are out there. I’m not one for a lot of social networking, so that’s good as well.

I’m the same way, for the most part, being online. Though I have started using my real name, and I do tend to put the city I live in, that’s about as far as it goes. I don’t put my address or phone number unless it’s something completely secure (I do some online shopping occasionally). If it asks for something I just put a fake one. I agree with Dez, there should be more people that are smart like you!
…I also am not sure what to write for this topic. I have until monday so I better think about it lol

I agree I have tried to hide information about myself just because there are crazy people out there, I wouldn’t be worried about it. I have seen people bugger things up by posting way too much information about them selves..

I don’t hide too much…but I definitely do hide some of the more personal details about my life, at least until I get to know you better. It’s a good idea to hide stuff from the general public I think.

For awhile I went with an alias as well, but as I got closer with people I let my name slip and eventually I was blogging with my real (first) name and such. I see so much personal info floating around sites like facebook though, it’s ridiculous. I’m not posting my phone number on someone’s wall, thankyouverymuch. I really wish more people cared about what they posted online.
